Mexico threatens to sue

America’s litigious curse is beginning to infect our neighbor to the south. Only a day after Mexico vowed to respect President Bush’s decisions on immigration as the acts of a sovereign nation, the Mexican government is now threatening to file suit.

“If we see the National Guard starting to directly participate in detaining people … we would immediately start filing lawsuits through our consulates…”
-Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derb

Is this what Mexico considers respecting the sovereignty of its neighbor? The question of whether or not the US government chooses to use the National Guard to enforce border security is not a decision that rests with the Mexican authorities and there are no grounds for that nation to file any law suit which this nation is bound to respect. If anything, the US government should begin legal action against Mexico for blatant and repeated actions to actively support massive illegal immigration to this country. There can be no skirting the fact that Mexican officials give tacit approval to such illegal border crossings, even providing migrants with assistance in order to facilitate that illegal activity. Through such actions Mexico has already demonstrated its lack of respect for a sovereign nation. Centuries ago such actions alone would be grounds for a declaration of war.

Mexican officials have also noted that posting the Guard along the border will not suppress illegal immigration, especially if there is an amnesty program in this country, which lends credence to the argument that any “guest worker” program should require applicants to apply in their home country, prior to entry into the United States…
