We’ve already made it abundantly clear that the CIA leak, Rove, Plame, etc…makes no never mind to us. This subject generates about as much interest as a Confederate War bond. The fact of the matter is, however, Bush has a real problem. It really doesn’t matter if anyone in the White House is indicted, it really doesn’t matter about guilt or innocence. There is a perception of impropriety, and this perception is making it increasingly difficult to govern. It is understood, that loyalty is an issue of grave importance to the President, but at what costs? Is loyalty more important than fulfilling one’s duty? The president now finds it difficult to push through any programs or proposals (remember Social Security reform), they are tainted on arrival, making his presidency a lame duck, less than a year into his second term. So what should the president do? First the president has to decide, whether its more important to have people close to him who are loyal but are also constant distractions or if its more important to push through his agenda in the time he has remaining. Bush should clean house. His staff should be composed of individuals who are beyond reproach. The collection of yes men in Bush’s White House only lend credence the Democratic arguments. Albeit true, by dismissing Rove and others, Bush would be giving the Democrats what they want, but it would also stun their criticism, freeing Bush from meaningless distractions.
