The Federal Bureau of Investigation is considering whether or not to relax its drug rules with regard to the FBI’s hiring policy. While this may seem like a rather unimportant issue, it is further evidence of America’s continued slide into depravity. What does this move say about the country as a whole? It says that more and more people are trying drugs as teens and in college, making it more and more difficult for businesses and governments to find qualified applicants who have not chosen to take drugs at some point in their life. According to some reports Marijuana, for example, is used by more than half of all teenagers during high school. Not only does this reflects society’s increasing acceptance of drug use, but also reflects the continued slide in quality parenting. Some officials say that what an individual did (or do) in college should be irrelevant. In reality, not only is it relevant, but it speaks volumes. At what point should people be held accountable for their actions? Do we really want people of such weak mind and character that they turn to illicit drugs in order to find peace or pleasure? Are we willing to trust such people to protect us from terrorism and other criminal actions? Those with drug dependency are weak, and therefore unreliable. Such weaknesses can be exploited by our enemies. Sure, its not murder, and the government should not waste a single minute of its time prosecuting such dredges for their behavior, but just as the FBI shouldn’t hire heavy drinkers, they shouldn’t be in the habit of hiring dope fiends as well, as it sets a dangerous precedent for the future. Naturally, there are those who favor the move by the FBI, but they too are either misguided or are drug users themselves. While libertarians may argue for a change in policy as well, libertarians should take note that there is no call to criminalize these rejects, but one must acknowledge that that is exactly what they are: rejects, and with good reason.
